Open Graph Images and Descriptions for Media

Introduction

Open Graph is a standard built by Facebook. They are meta tags that get added to the site to tell the platform how to unfurl a link. When sending a text message or posting on Facebook the image and description you see with the link are controlled by open graph settings.

In Fluid, you can control these on individual pieces of media. Fluid has set your default open graph image and description. This article will walk you through how to add an open graph image or description on individual pieces of media.

Setting OG Image and Descriptions on Individual Media

  1. Login to your Admin Portal.
  2. On your left hand navigation bar, under More select Sharing and then Media which will open up all of your media assets.
  3. Select the piece of Media you want to add open graph images and descriptions to.
  4. Once the piece of media is open, on the right navigation you will see SEO.
  5. Select the edit button next to Search Engine Listing which will open a slider with your SEO settings related to that piece of media.
  6. Here you can:
    1. Upload an Image
    2. Create an SEO Title
    3. Create your SEO Meta Description
  7. Click Save

Open Graph Image Best Practices

  • Correct Dimensions
    • Recommended: 1200 × 630 px (1.91:1 aspect ratio).
    • Minimum: 600 × 315 px.
  • High Quality & Optimized
    • Use JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text/logos.
    • Keep under 300 KB for faster loading.
  • Brand Visibility
    • Include logo or branding subtly in the corner.
    • Make sure text isn’t too small — social previews shrink images.
  • Readable Design
    • Avoid clutter, prioritize strong visuals or short punchy text overlays.
    • Ensure important elements aren’t cut off when cropped to square.
  • Fallback Safety
    • Always specify og:image:width and og:image:height so platforms render it correctly.
    • Provide multiple image versions if possible (og:image:alt for accessibility is great too).

Open Graph Description Best Practices

  • Length Matters
    • Keep between 100–160 characters.
    • Facebook truncates after ~300 characters; LinkedIn/X even shorter.
  • Compelling Copy
    • Make it a teaser, not a duplicate of the headline.
    • Example: Instead of “Our blog post about SEO best practices”, try “Learn 7 proven SEO tactics that will boost your traffic this year.”
  • Keywords & Clarity
    • Describe what the page is about in plain language.
    • Useful for both humans and search engines.
  • Consistency with Meta Description
    • It can be the same as your SEO meta description, but feel free to tweak tone for social (more engaging).
