Understanding Domain Management

Core Functionality

Domain management encompasses several critical aspects of web infrastructure:

DNS Configuration:

  • Domain Name System settings that direct traffic to your servers
  • Record management for various domain configurations
  • Subdomain routing and management
  • Load balancing and failover configurations

SSL Certificate Management:

  • Secure Sockets Layer certificates for encrypted connections
  • Certificate installation, renewal, and monitoring
  • Security validation and compliance verification
  • HTTPS enforcement and mixed content prevention

Redirect Management:

  • URL redirection for domain changes or restructuring
  • SEO-friendly redirect configurations
  • Wildcard redirect patterns for complex routing
  • Temporary and permanent redirect options

Subdomain Administration:

  • Wildcard subdomain configurations
  • Individual subdomain management and routing
  • Subdomain-specific SSL certificate handling
  • Multi-tenant subdomain architectures

Domain Configuration

URL Configuration:

  • Domain URL field showing the current domain address
  • Ability to modify or update the primary domain URL
  • Validation for proper domain format and accessibility

Redirect Configuration:

  • Redirect to Domain (optional): Set up domain forwarding to another URL
  • Current Setting: "None - Stay on domain" (no redirect currently configured)
  • Dropdown menu with redirect options for domain management strategies

Redirect Options:

  • None - Stay on domain: Keep users on the current domain
  • Permanent Redirect: SEO-friendly permanent forwarding

Primary Domain Settings:

  • Primary Domain Toggle: Designate this domain as the primary website domain
  • Description: "Make this the primary domain for your website"
  • Impact: Primary domain affects SEO, default routing, and system-wide domain references

Step 1:

  • Add Domain: In the top right hand corner select the "Add Domain" button.
  • Enter Domain Name: Enter the Domain Name you would like to connect with Fluid
  • Redirect Settings: Choose if you would like to have wild subdomain's with this domain, i.e. wildcard.example.com || johndoe.example.com will both work. If you already have a different domain configured you can redirect to that one instead.

Step 2:

CNAME Record: We will provide you with a CNAME record to point your site to Fluid. This is a dynamic configuration and will be different for every domain.

Verify: Once you have added the CNAME record to your domain registrar click the "Verify" Button

Authorization: This authorization process can take up to 10 minutes to verify.

Step 3:

  • A Record and CNAME: Once your domain has been verified you will be navigated to the next step. Here you will be given an A record and another CNAME to point your domain to Fluid.
  • Verification: Confirm once you have added these records to your Domain Registrar. Once these are verified your domain will be connected to Fluid

Step 4:

  • Complete: Once you are redirected to the fourth step your domain has been verified and configured with Fluid.
  • Primary Domain: Here you can choose if you want this to be the primary domain for your website. If you do not know you can always update it later from the Domains Table in the settings page.

DNS Status Monitoring

The system provides real-time monitoring of DNS configuration status:

Configuration Availability:

  • DNS configuration options become available based on domain verification status
  • Message: "DNS configuration will be available based on the domain verification status"
  • Automatic enablement once domain verification is completed

DNS Record Types:

  • A Records: Point domain to specific IP addresses
  • CNAME Records: Create domain aliases and subdomain routing
  • MX Records: Configure email routing for domain-based email addresses
  • TXT Records: Domain verification and security configurations

Verification Process:

  1. Domain ownership verification through DNS records or file upload
  2. SSL certificate generation and installation
  3. DNS propagation monitoring and validation
  4. Full configuration activation upon successful verification

Best Practices

Domain Setup and Configuration

Initial Domain Setup:

  • Verify domain ownership through your domain registrar
  • Configure proper DNS records pointing to your server infrastructure
  • Install and configure SSL certificates for secure connections
  • Test domain resolution and accessibility from multiple locations

SSL Certificate Management:

  • Use trusted Certificate Authorities for SSL certificates
  • Implement automatic certificate renewal to prevent expiration
  • Monitor certificate status regularly through the admin interface
  • Ensure all subdomains are covered by wildcard or individual certificates

DNS Configuration Best Practices:

  • Use reliable DNS providers with good uptime records
  • Implement proper TTL (Time To Live) values for DNS records
  • Configure backup DNS servers for redundancy
  • Monitor DNS propagation after making changes

Redirect Strategy:

  • Use 301 redirects for permanent domain changes to preserve SEO value
  • Implement proper redirect chains without creating loops
  • Test redirects thoroughly before implementing in production
  • Monitor redirect performance and update as needed

Security Considerations

SSL/TLS Security:

  • Always use HTTPS for all domains handling sensitive information
  • Implement HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) headers
  • Regularly update SSL certificates before expiration
  • Monitor for SSL certificate warnings or errors

Domain Security:

  • Enable domain locking at your registrar to prevent unauthorized transfers
  • Use strong authentication for domain management accounts
  • Implement DNS security extensions (DNSSEC) where available
  • Monitor for unauthorized DNS changes or domain hijacking attempts

Access Control:

  • Limit domain management access to authorized personnel only
  • Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication
  • Regularly audit domain management permissions
  • Maintain logs of all domain configuration changes

Troubleshooting

Common Domain Issues

Domain Not Connecting:

  • Verify DNS records are properly configured at your domain registrar
  • Check that DNS propagation has completed (can take up to 48 hours)
  • Ensure server configuration accepts connections for the specified domain
  • Verify firewall and security settings allow domain traffic

SSL Certificate Problems:

  • Check that SSL certificate is properly installed and configured
  • Verify certificate covers all necessary domain variations (www, non-www, subdomains)
  • Ensure certificate is not expired or revoked
  • Test SSL configuration using online SSL testing tools

DNS Resolution Issues:

  • Use DNS lookup tools to verify record propagation
  • Check for conflicting DNS records or misconfigurations
  • Verify DNS servers are responding and accessible
  • Clear local DNS cache and test from multiple locations

Redirect Problems:

  • Test redirect functionality using browser developer tools
  • Check for redirect loops or incorrect redirect destinations
  • Verify redirect type (301/302) matches intended usage
  • Monitor redirect impact on SEO and user experience

Monitoring and Maintenance

Regular Maintenance Tasks

Monthly Checks:

  • Verify SSL certificate expiration dates and renewal status
  • Test domain accessibility and loading speeds
  • Review DNS configuration for any unauthorized changes
  • Monitor domain registration expiration dates

Quarterly Reviews:

  • Analyze domain performance and traffic patterns
  • Review redirect configurations for optimization opportunities
  • Audit domain security settings and access controls
  • Plan for any upcoming domain changes or additions

Annual Tasks:
